Tips for How to Video Interview Two People

My dad was visiting recently and was telling me about someone at his church who was interviewing couples with long marriages for a special program they were doing. So my dad asked me for some tips to help him get a better video. Here’s what I told him.

  1. Use an external microphone, and preferably a lapel mic. With two people, clip the mic on the side next to the other person and have the second person speak up a little. Most microphones will still pick up both people nicely.
  2. Frame the shot using the rule of thirds. This becomes trickier for shooting two people, but essentially, picture a tic tac toe grid and put their eyes at the top cross beam.
